Leadership is about the influence one has over others; the capability to influence others towards a common goal. For one to be an effective leader and be able to maintain that leadership, there are some qualities and skills that he must possess; for instance: Refection, which is the ability to analyze and examine in a serious way one’s experience and the ability to predict or rather see how those experiences shaped one’s progress and relationship with others. Reflection makes room for critical thinking about the impact of one’s actions on the progress and achievement. It is said that one of the key elements that made Marcus Aurelius a successful philosopher was reflection; he used to create time to withdraw and reflect on a daily basis.

Reflection helped him examine his own habits and motives thus rewarding him with an opportunity to renew his commitments on the duties he held. There is a saying that the best leaders are the best learners; thus leadership is construed as an observable pattern of practice and behaviors comprised of skills and abilities. These skills are learned. To be a better leader, one needs to learn from past experiences and engage in activities that can make them better. To learn, one needs to have a strong desire to excel and believe that he or she can learn new ideas to achieve better heights. Learning can be achieved through experimentation, observation, studying or rather researching and self-reflection as well as reflecting on others experiences.

Learning makes a person who is good better and if it is about being talented, then learning hones the talent and makes one great, after all, it has been said that the secret to success is persistence, dedication, unrelenting and deliberate exercise. Transactional leadership is a leadership skill practiced at managerial level where it aids in directing and exacting authority as well as obedience/compliance among the subordinates. Transactional leaders are imparted with skills on punishment, rewarding and motivating subordinates. This type of leadership is only effective in mid-level management and not at the helm of an organization or a charitable/volunteer organization.

A good leader need more than transactional leadership skills to sustain his leadership position and qualities. Visionary leadership is the capability of a leader to visualize new ideas and propel it to prosperity. One of prominent business minds, Walt Disney imagined an amusement park in the
midst of uninhabited Florida swamp and proceeded to make it a reality. For success, one needs to imagine how useful an idea could be before planning for it; our brain is always involved in thinking and imagining and thus to make it useful, it should not be spent worrying but imagining of creative resourceful ideas.

Our imagination is a powerful tool that can be transformed into creative ideas and models and embark on a risk taking mission to produce the real thing. Take for instance athletes, they imagine how they can win the race and once the race kicks on, they put their imagination into practice since they had envisioned the win before, they cannot let it go thus more motivation to win. A visionary leader is one who sees potential in every situation they are presented with; case in point is Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore who envisioned a metropolitan city out of an island city and proceeded to transform it into a first world metropolitan city.

Visionary leadership has been dubbed as the most powerful leadership skill that is effective in yielding results as the leader is able to gain much more from the employees and subordinates that paying salary alone would not have achieved; he creates commitment from them. It’s about exploration and not accepting things at their face value when in deep you can extract more results. Transformational leadership on the other hand is more of an aspect, character, personality, values and beliefs of a leader.

A leader who is able to inspire a team, put the teams needs before his own and become a role model of the team then he is a transformational leader.
A transformational leader is one who challenges the status quo and executes a plan on how to improve it; for instance, for a sports coach, you need to have transformational skills to take the team to new heights and not resign to being the weakest or the second best. Making the teams goals personal and inspiring the team to achieve what you have envisioned.

To make a change and inspire the team towards the new heights, the leader has to possess impeccable character, one that is admired and always ready to take up responsibility for his actions and not shifting blames. Thus to become a transformational leader, you must also possess visionary leadership skills.

The difference between transactional and transformational leadership is that the while transactional is all about the leader and the follower, transformational leader is able to predict the emotional and motivational attachment of the follower and going beyond reward for compliance. Notably, a transformational leader can also posses transactional leadership skills as the only difference is the art of motivating the followers.
