LAWS4229/LAWS8594 Law and Society in Southeast Asia
Semester 1, 2021 – Final Research Essay
The course has covered 7 cases across 3 jurisdictions. What can the legal disputes in
these cases tell us about the social divisions in these societies?
Please refer to the Class Summary for details about word limit, deadline, etc.
For those enrolled in LAWS4229, the essay must be based on at least 4 cases from at
least 2 jurisdictions. At least means at the minimum. You can go beyond the minimum.
For those enrolled in LAWS8594, the essay must be based on at least 5 cases from all
3 jurisdictions. At least means at the minimum. You can go beyond the minimum.
Do not summarize the law or the facts of the cases. That is a waste of words. I have
read the cases. I do not want summary. I want analysis.
The cases are the primary materials. Substantial independent research into secondary
materials (books, journal articles, etc) is expected.
The first sentence of the essay should be: “This essay will argue that…” Note the verb:
argue. It is not enough just to discuss. The essay must have an argument that directly
answers the question, which should be stated right at the start.
Here is an example of an argument: “This essay will argue that the cases reveal two
opposing ways of dealing with the colonial legacy.” (Do not copy and paste this
argument into your essay. You have to come up with your own.)
