This is an essay writing task, applied to the scenario below. Ensure that where required, you directly address the issues outlined in the case. The tasks are listed at the end of the scenario.
Florence and her husband met after moving to the UK from St Lucia in 1958.
Florence was 8 and Errol was 10. They had three children, who have all left home.
The eldest, Karen is working in the USA. Tirone is a supermarket manager and has recently been moved to a store in the west country. Chloe, the youngest, and her husband run their own clothing business, which they are working all hours to get going.
Four years ago, Errol fell, cutting his head and breaking his wrist. He was diagnosed as having had a ‘mini stroke’. Since then he has had several more and has become increasingly forgetful and confused. Last year, he was diagnosed as having multi-infarct dementia. He has become anxious and doesn’t like to be very far from Florence. This is getting on Florence’s nerves as she never seems to have any space; at times she finds herself shouting at him and then regrets it.
She doesn’t like to leave him for long and misses the man he was and feels lonely. Errol has always been handy around the house, but now the house has become rundown. Six months ago, a man called George called at the house saying they had a tile loose on the roof. He offered to fix it for no charge. Once up there he noticed that their gutters needed cleaning. He didn’t charge too much, so they went ahead. It felt such a relief to Florence to not have to worry about maintaining the property. Over the next few weeks, George did a range of jobs, such as painting the hallway. His prices seem to be getting higher, and she is now struggling to afford them, but Florence found him to be such a nice man and good company. She gave George a key to the house, as her arthritis made it difficult to get to the door.
Over the last couple of weeks, she noticed that several small items had gonemissing in the house; they weren’t very expensive but had a sentimental value. She asked Errol if he had moved them but he could not remember. She asked George, but he became angry. He said it must have been Errol and that he should go into a home. Florence has now noticed that she can’t find a gold necklace that Errol gave her on her 50th Birthday. She is scared to speak to George about it, as she doesn’t want to make him angry.
Her next-door neighbour, Sanjit, sees Florence looking distressed and when she explains, Sanjit contacts social services.
