use Research Analysis and Synthesis (RAS) discussions to analyze a set of research studies under the following scenario: Your facility has been debating whether or not gum chewing is an effective intervention to reduce length of stay for patients after surgery. You will be working with a team of nurses to develop research-based recommendations as to whether this innovation should be placed as part of the post operative care guidelines.

Example RAS Post
Below is an example of a 5-point RAS post. It is based on a previous student’s post that I have modified and added to. To earn the full 5 points, include two complete paragraphs, use proper APA formatting and style, and use at least one class resource (textbook, class articles, etc.) and at least one outside source. Do not forget to use proper citations and include a reference list. You do not need a cover page or abstract. Discuss concepts relevant to the topic at hand and bring in outside information to strength the discussion and build a dialogue between classmates.

The hypotheses used for the class gum chewing articles are very similar. Another study conducted by Schuster, Grewal, Greaney, and Waxman (2006) tested a comparable hypothesis. They hypothesized that chewing gum after an elective open colon resection may stimulate bowel motility and decrease the duration of postoperative ileus. Like this study by Schuster et al., Asao et al. (2002) had two groups in their study: a gum chewing group and a control group. Because they have very similar hypotheses, they chose the same type of study design: randomized control trials. They also had similar results with the same conclusion that chewing gum postoperatively increases the recovery time in patients after surgery. Schuster et al. concluded that “gum chewing early in the postoperative period following elective partial sigmoid colon resections hastens time to bowel motility and ability to tolerate feedings. This inexpensive and well-tolerated treatment resulted in earlier hospital discharge” (Comment Section, Para. 6). Since the hypotheses the researchers are testing are so similar, it makes sense that how they design their studies to test those hypotheses would also be similar.
The hypotheses for these two articles are also similar to the hypothesis for the study by Matros et al. (2006), however they added a placebo to strengthen their study. For example, Matros et al. hypothesized that “Gum chewing is more effective than a placebo in hastening bowel recovery and shortening hospitalization after open colectomy” (p. 773). This study similarly used an intervention group and a control group, but having a placebo added a third group. This is useful because it allows the researchers to control for the placebo effect, when participants think that they feel better due to the treatment, because they expect it to work. Having this placebo makes the study stronger and leads to a better test of the hypothesis than the studies by Schuster et al. (2006) and Asao et al. (2002).
