Injured Athlete Interview Paper Requirements
Be sure to incorporate references (i.e., specific peer-reviewed literature citations, references to course lectures, etc.) from your interview, class lecture, and readings to substantiate your responses. Prepare a paper of no more than five pages in length (not including title page, reference list, and other appendices or attachments), typed and double spaced in APA format, that includes the following sections.

  1. Introduction: Describe the background of the sport injury psychology, purpose of the paper, and explain why the specific athlete for interviewing was chosen. (~.5 page)
  2. Provide a general overview of the athlete you interviewed (please do not provide their real names or any identifying information at any time in the paper, but use pseudonyms) with respect to such things as sport background, nature of the injury, motives for sport participation, and anything else of importance. (~.5 page)
  3. Analyze the nature of pre-injury factors in the context of this particular athlete (e.g., questions 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15). Connect the pre-injury factors for this athlete to course material and related research. (~1 page)
  4. Analyze the nature of the post-injury cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to injury for this athlete (e.g., questions 6, 8, 9, 16, 17, 18, 21, 23, 24). Connect the post-injury factors for this athlete to course material and related research. (~1 page)
  5. Identify and discuss at least one additional interesting or important findings from your interview based on the sociological and psychological pre-injury and post-injury topics covered in class. This may be something that arose during your interview that does not fit with the analysis included in earlier sections, but is relevant to understanding the full context of this athlete’s injury and/or recovery. (~.5 page)
  6. If you were an athletic trainer, physical therapist, coach, or sport psychology consultant assigned to work with this athlete, which psychological and social strategies might you employ (in addition to the physical ones) to enhance her or his rehabilitation (e.g., goal setting, imagery, stress management, social support)? Describe how the strategies would be implemented for this athlete. Why would these be suited to this athlete in particular? Connect your rehabilitation strategy to course material and related research. (~1 page)
  7. Conclusion: Include one conclusion paragraph summarizing the injury and recovery experience for this athlete and provide 1-2 take home messages. (~.5 page)
  8. References: Include at least 2 peer-reviewed scholarly sources in your paper that were not assigned readings in this course. You also need to include at least 1 source in your paper that was a required course reading for this course (e.g., the textbook or ICON reading). Therefore, you should have a minimum of 3 total sources cited in your paper. Cite all sources in-text and in a reference list in APA format. The reference page does not count toward the page length. You must find at least 2 more peer-reviewed scholarly sources that were not assigned readings in this course to cite in your paper.
  9. Materials: Attach copy of completed ERAIQ questionnaire (handwritten with your notes is fine, you do not need to type this part) as an appendix at the end of your paper. NO NAMES OR IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR INTERVIEW SUBJECTS SHOULD BE WRITTEN ON THESE FORMS.
  10. The appendix does not count toward the page length requirements of the paper.
