Description

Part A: Blog post (max 1,500 words)

Each student is to write a blog post in plain English, narrating a contemporary ‘urban’ story that is based on a case study from East/Southeast Asia broadly defined. The case can be a social group, a neighbourhood, a city, a region, an organisation or a policy. Recommendation is to choose a topical case that also reflects your own academic and/or career interests, and which you feel motivated to research on in order to collect data to inform your writing. You are welcome to make use of your previous direct exposure to a particular place in the region. The contents of the blog are to reflect what we cover in the GY438 course.

A blog is a form of public writing, and targets non-specialist audience who have subject interests in what we study in GY438. Therefore, you are to use as few jargons as possible to engage readers or explain them when you do so.

Part B: Academic essay (max. 3,000 words)

The essay acts as an academic supporting document for the blog post. In the essay, students are required to reflect upon the story narrated in their blog post in an academic way. While the blog post shows a “what” and/or “how” story, students are encouraged in this short essay to respond to the “why” question by incorporating readings and discussions taken place in the course.
